Ngā mihi nui for a big year of positive social impact

It’s been a year! We’re still in our infancy as a social enterprise, but in the time we’ve been operating, we’ve had more than 200 people participate in our food experiences, and more than 450 people were provided with the delicious food we made together. And of the people we’ve reached, about one third are facing a range of hardships and wouldn’t have otherwise been able to access the skills development, food knowledge, and social connection that we aim to provide. So, huge thank you ...

Travelling Kitchen takes on Tauranga

"Tasty simplicity" is what one person said about our cooking session with families in Tauranga. This session was part of Travelling Kitchen's 'trial roadshow', where we wanted to test if we could throw everything (equipment, ingredients, and ourselves) in a van, and deliver a really great food experience in an unfamiliar venue in a distant location. The good news is, yes we can! The families split into teams to make kumara nuggets, pickled cucumbers, honey-soy chicken, and quick-cook flatbread....

Community Cook-up

The community that cooks together, stays together! That’s what it felt like at our two ‘Community Cook’ sessions at Miramar Maupuia Community Centre. We got to meet new people, have some ‘aha’ moments about ingredients and recipes, and – best of all – eat all the food we’d just cooked, as well as take some home for others! We cooked gluten-free yoghurt flatbread, pickled cucumber with foraged mint, kumara nuggets, honey-soy chicken with foraged onion weed, and one-tray mac ’n’...

Melbourne FareShare Inspiration

As the Travelling Kitchen journey begins, we appreciate the effort of others doing great things for people, with food. FareShare, Melbourne's largest charity kitchen, hosted Laura and 14 of her colleagues this week to support their efforts in cooking free nutritional food for those in need. The organisation is largely run by volunteers, including volunteer Chef Polly, who guided us through the making of 1106 sausage rolls, plus 40 trays with pastry bases for 960 bacon and egg pies. Good effort,...

The power of food and people

Why are we bringing great people, ideas and stories together through food? Why do we want to inspire people and raise their sense of connection with others through cooking? Because food has that power. Food is more than fuel to get us through our day. It's more than something we throw in a trolley once a week.  We see people's sense of sense grow when they can touch, taste, smell and see ingredients, and transform them into a delicious meal to share with others. We see the happiness famili...
